Surnames: STATES GIBSON
Submitter: Wendy White (meowmommy@prodigy.net)
Date: 19 Feb 2002

In the Alton Democrat newspaper dated July 30, 1880 there is a short article under the heading 'Alhambra and Greencastle': "A young man named Joseph States, residing in the north part of Centralia, Ill., who was married over nineteen days since, was shot dead in his yard by some unknown person. There is no clue to the murderer. The dreadful deed is supposed to have been committed by some of his previous rivals in the suit for the hand of his bride. Some suppose it to be a case of suicide, caused by the fact that he was destitute of funds. He was shot through the heart. His wife went out and found him just dying." Was this Joseph States the same as Joseph William States, son of John Hazel States and Rosanna Gibson who once lived in Marion County? Who was the wife mentioned in the article? Has anybody heard of this murder case? If so, is there more information about it anywhere in the Marion County court files?

Date: 27 Feb 2002

I would like to locate a place about 10 miles south or southwest of Salem. It was an oil lease located among cultivated land. The name my parents associated with the site was Fredrick Oil Lease. It had several pumper wells and a central prower house with draw rods to each well. My older sister attended the first and second grades at a school approximately a mile north of the site. Her name was Adele Berry. We lived on the site from 1940 - 1943. We left when I was six, and have never returned. My parents are now deceased. In addition, a brother was born and died at birth in about 1940. We lived out of Salem (north I think) on the Bill Walsh farm at the time. I do not know where he is buried. He was named Tommy Dave Berry. I have a picture of the casket but do not know whether a stone was placed marking the grave site. I have searched all many, many web sites with no success. If you can be of assistance, I would greatly appreciate locating these two sited. Thank you. Charles Berry
